Propylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether (PGME)

Propylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether (abbreviated as PGME or PM, CAS No.: 107-98-2) is a typical propylene glycol ether solvent. Its molecule contains both a hydrophilic hydroxyl group and a lipophilic ether group, granting it excellent solvency for a wide range of polar and non-polar substances, and making it miscible with water, ethanol, ether, and most other solvents. Compared to some ethylene glycol ethers, PGME has the significant advantage of lower toxicity, making its application safer. In the coatings industry, it serves as an efficient active solvent for water-based paints, alkyd resin lacquers, and nitrocellulose lacquers, significantly improving coating leveling property and stability, and is widely used in automotive paints and other fields. In the inks sector, it is a key component in solvent-based printing inks and is also used in ballpoint and fountain pen inks. In the cleaning industry, PGME acts as an effective coupling agent and solvent in household and industrial cleaners, rust removers, glass cleaners, and hard-surface cleaners. Furthermore, it is used as an anti-icing agent for jet fuel, an additive for brake fluids, and an important intermediate in the synthesis of herbicides (e.g., metolachlor). In recent years, high-purity electronic-grade PGME has played a significant role in cleaning electronic components such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs).
